Spotlight: Wine&Dine Singapore’s Top Restaurants 2012

Brand new year, brand new listings! No, I’m not talking about the real estate market; It’s Wine&Dine‘s 15th edition of Singapore’s Top Restaurants. Foodies will know the many publications and their annual list of awards/top restaurants in Singapore–if you didn’t, well now you do.

Those are always hounding Saunders & myself for restaurant recommendations, why not take a look at what Wine&Dine has published? *Hint hint.

While we didn’t seem to find Peach Blossoms (read their CNY 2012 menu review) to be of the ‘Best Ambience’ standard when we visited, Keystone and their awesome dishes (check out our review) are definitely deserving of their ‘Most Innovative Menu’ win. We can’t wait to see what’s up their sleeves for their new menu!

Salt Grill & Sky Bar is next up on our list, so check back soon to find out what we think!

Spotlight: PizItalia @ East Coast Beach

Pizitalia @ East Coast Beach

When we got an invitation to PizItalia @ East Coast Beach, I could not help but think the restaurant looked like a lost tourist in Chinatown – an Italian restaurant in a sea of local seafood favourites. Skeptical initially, I was pleasantly surprised with the Italian twist to our traditionally Singaporean food when it was served.

PizItalia is located at the hub of the seafood restaurants at East Coast Beach. It boasts a large selection of wine, but the table setting cheapens the restaurant – plastic chairs coupled with Daiso tablemats and cheap plastic chili and tomato sauce bottles (do they even have that in Italy?) definitely does not put one in the mood for wine.

Review: The Garden @ Sentosa

On a continuation of my escapism streak, a friend convinced me that the long distance from our big sunny island to the equally sunny, smaller island of Sentosa would be worth it. No, I wasn’t going to go Airplane mode ‘on’ and bake at the busy beaches; I was in search of a serene place for lunch.

In what seemed to be a scene out of a fairytale, this cosy, tranquil restaurant seemed to pop out into existence. Right next to Spa Botanica within The Sentosa Report & Spa, The Garden offers a charming, idyllic respite while serving up contemporary cuisine. It’s no surprise patrons would rather not spill the beans on this spot.

Located in a charming conservation building, the décor plays mostly with earthy tones with some pops of white’s and red’s. The interior is airy and bright, with plenty of natural light flooding in. Al fresco seating by the pool and manmade waterfall is also available.

Review: Megumi Restaurant @ Upper East Coast

Megumi Restaurant @Upper East Coast

Usually when going out for dinners, I would opt for Japanese food. Like many, I am under (and still am) the pretense that Japanese food is healthy, if you avoid the tempura; and the chicken or pork katsu; and the Japanese curry. Correction – just order sashimi.

I could have opted for Sushi Tei, but where is the joy as a food writer to dine in highly commercialized Japanese restaurants. And so I made a reservation at Megumi Restaurant @ Upper East Coast – one of my favourite neighbourhood Japanese restaurants in the east. It is rather small and packed; so do make reservations to avoid disappointments. Service is outright bad with each waiter lost in his sea of orders and request, so you have been forewarned. That being said, I assure you the food makes up for it.

Spotlight: Señor Taco – New Flagship Restaurant @ CHIJMES

When Señor Taco is no longer just Señor Taco; gone are the days where it’s a plain Mexican food stall as Señor Taco opened its new flagship restaurant ‘Señor Taco’—also Singapore’s first Mexican taqeuria and cantina—at CHIJMES.

Steering away from the heavy Mexican dishes revolving around seafood, expect to find light bites and platters for sharing as you knock back some drinks in the charming ambiance of the inner square of CHIJMES.

Accompanying the food is one of the widest and finest ranges of tequila you can find in Singapore. With four entire shelves, and counting, ranging from $9 for a shot of Don Julio Blanco to $200 for a sipping glass of Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario, it’s time to get chummy with the staff here if you love your tequilas.
