Review: The Wok & Barrel @ Duxton Hill

Besides the craze that is all things Japanese, Italian or operated by Michelin-starred chefs, another popular trend, that has already taken us by storm, is the craving for local delights. I mean, have you seen the sheer number of restaurants that offer a selection of, or even cater wholly to local fare?

Just as how Sunday’s edition of Lifestyle released a write-up on ‘Mod Sin’—short for modern Singaporean—our recent visit to The Wok & Barrel is perfect for a timely review of some modern Singaporean cuisine.

Review: La Villa @ River Valley

La Villa @ River Valley

Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in Singapore; after more than 300 plates of aglio olio, can you honestly rank them all in order? Probably not, but then again you are not a food writer so you would not have to. That is why La Villa @ River Valley stands out as an Italian restaurant.

Review: La Nonna @ Namly Place

The parents were out of town and I was in-charge of babysitting the siblings. This, of course, meant that I was free to plan meals for the little monsters.

Feeling like something Italian that lovely afternoon, I was immediately drawn to La Nonna, in a glossy page of the magazine, with their promises of a revamped menu and 1-for-1 promotion. Hey, who am I to let go of such a good deal?

Six&Seven @ 1-Caramel – Valentine Valrhona Chocolate Workshop

What’s not to love about chocolates? I melt at the very sight of the dark, chocolaty slab of antioxidant goodness. When Six&Seven received Melissa and Audrey’s invite to a Valentine Chocolate Workshop at 1-Caramel using Valrhona chocolates, I just had to say YES!

Review: Fat Cow @ Camden Medical Centre

Fat Cow @ Camden Medical Centre

What was previously White Bait & Kale at Camden Medical Centre has been replaced with the newly opened Fat Cow. I figured that given the private specialist clinic’s wealthy patrons, the previous restaurant may have been deemed the way we saw MacDonalds – cheap, but not worth the stomach space.

The opening of Fat Cow could not have been more befitting. As the name suggests, the restaurant boats a premium selection of Wagyu beef. They have oddly branded themselves as a “bespoke Japanese-inspired meat atelier”, which may come across as a tad superfluous. That being said, Fat Cow’s selection of Japanese A3 and A5 grade beef, alongside with Australian Wagyu from either Stockyard or Blackmore Ranch with marbling no less than 8+, promises an unforgettable dining experience.

Can you feel that tension in the air? This is just the prelude to the over-commercialized Valentine’s Day. Ah yes, the perfect excuse for all the lovers to spend that Ang Pow money you’ve collected over the CNY period.

As Saunders has no need for V. Day desires, I’m here to share where I’d like to be whisked off on this day that celebrates my ‘Forever Alone‘-ness. In no particular order at all, Jasper chooses..
