Review: Hummerstons @ Robertson Quay

Hummerstons @ Robertson Quay

I was never quite a fervent believer of Valentine’s Day; I always saw it as an over commercialized marketing concept created by retailers to boost sales. I never understood how does one put with exorbitant prices and crammed dinner tables all in the name of love. Nevertheless, I chose to indulge in the spirit of this “season of love” and arrange dinner with a friend. Also, I simply could not turn down my first Valentine’s dinner.

Embarrassment aside, I embarked my virginal experience with a close friend. Restaurant: Hummerstons @ Robertson Quay. The interior of the restaurant offers a good blend of casual and intimate dining. While the choice of decorations does bear a resemblance to P.S. Café, that is only because the chef/ owner was from there and simply “Crtl + V” the blueprints. Nevertheless, it was a perfect setting; given my dinner date and I were not romantically involved.

Review: Ardent’s Cafe Bar @ Neil Road

As food writers, we go where our tummies take us. This time, feeling like a little breakfast, we trotted down to Neil Road to try out Ardent’s Café Bar. In the day, the empty street—famed for its nightlife—had a certain calmness, and a rustic charm from the rows of shophouses.

Located the place was a breeze, thanks to my trusty iPhone and the café’s visible sign. If you are thinking of heading down, I’d suggest taking a bus – there is a bus stop almost directly opposite the entrance – as it can be quite a distance from the nearest MRT stations.

Stepping through the door, and onto the only slightly pretentious, fake grass—looking like something off ESPN’s tennis matches—I certainly didn’t experience the ‘strangely familiar and comforting’ that their website described. It does, however, lend a whimsical touch, befitting an all-day breakfast café.

Review: Torte @ Waterloo Street & Adoption Drive

Torte @ Waterloo Street

The workweek can sometimes get extremely grueling for us. To tide ourselves through, many of us have a reflex response or a quick fix solution – some go for massages or engage in some online retail therapy. For me, it is a weekly patronage to Torte @ Waterloo Street.

Torte remains to be one of my favourite cafes to visit during during a school week. Located just a 5 minute walk from Singapore Management University, it is my little hidden oasis in the heart of a bustling city. Why anyone would subject themselves to the mad lunch rush and “tissue packet reservation” technique is beyond me; I am ensured of my peaceful, quiet and hassle-free lunches here.

Review: The Wok & Barrel @ Duxton Hill

Besides the craze that is all things Japanese, Italian or operated by Michelin-starred chefs, another popular trend, that has already taken us by storm, is the craving for local delights. I mean, have you seen the sheer number of restaurants that offer a selection of, or even cater wholly to local fare?

Just as how Sunday’s edition of Lifestyle released a write-up on ‘Mod Sin’—short for modern Singaporean—our recent visit to The Wok & Barrel is perfect for a timely review of some modern Singaporean cuisine.

Review: La Villa @ River Valley

La Villa @ River Valley

Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in Singapore; after more than 300 plates of aglio olio, can you honestly rank them all in order? Probably not, but then again you are not a food writer so you would not have to. That is why La Villa @ River Valley stands out as an Italian restaurant.
