After cartoon characters such as Hello Kitty and Pompompurin, lazy egg Gudetama is the latest to hit our shores, and in the best way that Singaporeans can relate to – food!
Taking over now-defunct The House of Robert Timms and its neighbouring space at Suntec City, Gudetama Cafe (opened 30 November 2016)—a collaboration between Joe & Dough and Soup Spoon, with cookbook author Little Miss Bento in-charge of styling the menu—presents a menu of ‘egg-ified’ fare that diners can enjoy at either their main dining hall with egg-shaped booths or their airy, garden-themed cafe space.
Aside from their range of this lazy and lovable Sanrio character-inspired mains, side dishes and desserts, you can also take home some exclusive Gudetama-themed merchandise at the store.
From the preview we had of the cafe’s menu at their pre-opening, a definite highlight is their Rib-I Don’t Care ($28.50). Succulent, chargrilled grass-fed Angus ribeye is enjoyed with a wild mushroom sauce, grilled vegetables and a ‘nua’ (Hokkien for ‘lazy’) potato mash.
Their Shiok Pork Ribs of slow-cooked, meaty St. Louis-style ribs drizzled with BBQ sauce isn’t too bad—would have been better if it was more fall-off-the-bone tender—but at $38.50, I’d frankly had more for less.
I wasn’t too excited about their Eggcited Cajun Chicken with Waffle ($23.90) or Gudetama Lobster Onsen ($16) though. The waffles under the chicken was flat and one dimensional, and the lobster bisque not as rich and flavourful as I’d like.
Desserts definitely fared better, especially their simple, adorable yet delicious creations that are also available for takeaway. Prices range around $7.50 for a Citrus Pan (lemon tart) to $8.90 for their White Chocolate Mango Roll with chunks of mango.
I also enjoyed the Gude Pudding ($16.90). Wobbly, rich caramel flan with a crown of vanilla soft serve, armed with caramelized banana and sesame orange tuile, on a throne of apple crumble.
This was an invited media tasting session, though all views expressed are my own.
